Iolite gemstones were discovered by W. Dan Hausel in 1995 at Palmer Canyon Wyoming. Dozens of gem-quality pink and white sapphires and some red rubies and millions of carats of kyanite were also found at the deposit. The largest known iolite gem in the world (fist size) was also found at the time. Other iolite gems were discovered a few years later at Grizzly Creek and then at Ragged Top Mountain.
